Light

Provide bright, indirect light or filtered sun.

Avoid intense midday direct sun, which can cause yellowing or scorching.

If indoors, place near a south- or east-facing window; supplement with a full-spectrum grow light if needed.

Temperature

Ideal range: 20–32°C during growth.

Tolerates cooler nights but protect from frost; minimum safe temperature is 5°C.

Keep dry during winter dormancy to prevent cold rot.

Watering

Water sparingly. Allow the soil to dry completely before watering again.

During the active growth season (spring to early autumn), water lightly every 2–6 weeks depending on climate and pot drainage.

In winter, stop watering entirely until warmth and growth resume.

Soil

Requires a very fast-draining, mineral-heavy mix. Example:

60–80% mineral (pumice, coarse sand, crushed lava rock, perlite).

20–40% organic (very small amount of fine cactus soil).

Avoid peat-heavy or moisture-retentive soils.

Pot and Drainage

Use a clay or unglazed ceramic pot to allow evaporation.

Ensure ample drainage holes.

Select a pot proportional to the large taproot; shallow narrow pots are not suitable.

Fertilization

Feed sparingly during active growth with a diluted low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer.

Do not fertilize in winter.

Humidity and Airflow

Keep in a dry, well-ventilated environment.

High humidity increases risk of rot.

Growth Habit

Very slow growth; avoid overwatering in attempt to speed growth.

Surface should remain firm.
